Just a stone’s throw from the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, a wide doorway, interrupting the continuity of the ashlar of the facade, opens onto the passage to a private courtyard, of those that make Milan the capital of an austere and, at the same time, intimate and timeless elegance.
Hence the access to the second floor, through the wide and majestic stairwell, to an apartment that, thanks to the skillful intervention of Dome Milano Studio, is now revived to new life.
The project to enhance the living spaces, after completion, exemplifies the possibilities of doing modern interior architecture while preserving a respectful reference to the classicism of the past and using the set of architectural and structural constraints related to the pre-existence as a stimulus for the invention of innovative and highly qualifying spatial, functional and aesthetic solutions.
The starting point of the renovation and restyling project was the careful consideration of some essential ingredients of the interior: the planimetric arrangement of the different rooms, extended to the eighty square meters of total interior surface area, the contribution of natural light, implemented through three large openings, and, finally, the chromatic and textural characteristics of some pre-existing materials, for which the opportunity of a conservation and recovery intervention was evaluated.
The furniture elements for the implementation of the project were provided by SAG’80 Group.
The most substantial interventions concerned the rooms with the strongest functional connotation: the bathroom, immediately accessible from the entrance area, and the kitchen open to the living room.
The former was redesigned through the application of a uniform pattern of marble grits on the floor and walls, while the latter, designed as a set of modules in lacquered gray, now offers, to the apartment’s owners, a condensation of modern functionality and luxurious design.
