Moooi’s lamp is an ode to the beauty of this world: here’s how design communicates with nature
The Moooi brand has accustomed us to truly amazing things, and it never ceases to impress us with original and unprecedented gimmicks. From “island” sofas like the Zliq Island Sofa, to armchair-squares like the Jackson chair…each creation of the Moooi brand seems to come from a sophisticated universe full of overflowing creativity.
But what happens when such a brand wants to showcase in one product the beauty of the world and extol the glory of nature?
We’ll tell you right away: the result is the Perch Light Branch, a highly original and innovative-looking creation.
By creating a lamp, designer Umut Yamac has succeeded in recreating the atmosphere of tranquility and pleasant joy that nature observation produces.
What could be more poetic and more delightful than a bird perched on a branch freely intoning a melody that seems to want to celebrate life? This image, strongly imprinted in our imagination, was taken up by the designer who, stylizing it through paper origami, made it into a lamp with a unique and harmonious appearance.
Fascinated by the combination of balance and movement, Umut Yamac has created a family of six birds that captivate the observer by their harmonious movement and grace.
The structure consists of a brass “branch” on which six birds of different sizes are elegantly placed. The birds are created from folded paper with a brass beak. Through blasts of air or with hand motions, the birds gently sway bringing a harmonious and natural movement to the interior of the room.
As the designer himself says, “the joy is in the detail,” which is why he takes care of every tiny detail of the lamp, creating an extremely refined product suitable for decorating our home in an original way.
Focus on branding
The Moooi brand was founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. The Dutch company faithfully carries on its original values of positivity, growth, innovation and passion, exporting products of high craftsmanship and originality all over the world. Another dictat that accompanies all of the Dutch brand’s production is beauty; in fact, the word mooi means precisely beauty. The addition of the third o in the brand name indicates a strong desire to stand out and personalize its creations. An element that succeeds very well for the brand, as each of their productions is characterized by a remarkable detachment from everything else on the design scene. Their willingness to surprise the observer reaches truly uncommon levels. Just think of their off-show installations in honor of Design Week in Milan, which the brand has been setting up since 2015. For example, at their last show a very traditional Charleston sofa in upholstered leather was presented. Very traditional except that it was resting on…an armrest! The most classic of sofas is thus transformed into a very high-backed armchair that ironically challenges the observer, making him see a classic piece of furniture with new eyes. As Marcel Wanders himself says when talking about that exhibition, “the theme we chose revolves around the concept of Rebel Harmony. A mix of timeless beauty, of delicate poetry, but with that detail that escapes the classic canons, playing on the edge of irony and fun.”
This is exactly the feeling you get from looking at Moooi products: irony and fun. Their environments are all lively and distinctive-from the shapes of the objects to the vibrant fabrics used. All marked by the pursuit of beauty.
This extreme search for originality can only lead the brand to produce highly customized elements; in fact, it does more: it produces Moooi signature elements with imagination at the customer’s request! This is the case, for example, with the carpet presented at Design Week 2016, displayed with designs by Finland’s Klaus Haapaniemi. As many patterns as desired can be submitted to the brand upon request to see ultra-customized rugs produced, made to satisfy in every detail design lovers who aspire to have a truly unique product.
