JEAN-LOUIS DENIOT – FRENCH STYLE IN NEW YORK
Right in the heart of Manhattan, New York’s most populated and well-known borough, Parisian and décor guru
Jean-Louis Deniot
took the lead in a project to restyle a town house housed in a four-level building with a period facade dating back to 1899.
If the exterior therefore deserves only to be preserved and admired, Deniot has devoted himself to the interior, which has been revolutionized through his sartorial touch and interpretation of the needs of the large family that inhabits this dwelling.
The more chic touch that has always characterized the French architect is thus combined with the need for comfort demanded by the context, to convey elegance but also tranquility and warmth in a space of about 800 square meters and 20 rooms.
These needs were translated into decorations that compensate for the lack of light, a French-style room sequence that involved the elimination of several corridors, and furniture solutions such as large bespoke sofas, an Eero Saarinen table that dialogues with an iconic Louis XV chandelier, or even a peculiar four-poster bed designed by Deniot himself to evoke the world of childhood and dreams.
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT AND THE HOUSE ON THE WATERFALL
A perfect symbol of the not-always-easy search for harmony between man and nature, the House on the Waterfall, or Fallingwater, is a project built in Pennsylvania by architect Frank Lloyd Wright between 1936 and 1939.
The dwelling is located right on the waterfall on Bear Run creek and tries to make artificial elements coexist embedded in a natural environment, posing as a manifesto of so-called organic architecture.
There were so many doubts about the possibility of building this house that there was no shortage of structural problems over the years, leading to renovations in 1996 that were necessary to prevent the structure from collapsing.
Nonetheless, Wright was able to create a design that fostered a fusion between the home environment and the surrounding nature: floors and walls are in fact made of the same stone as the exterior, and there is no shortage of terraces or other openings in the house that overlook the very stream.
Today, the House on the Waterfall is a museum available for tourists to admire a unique architectural design that, with great foresight, aimed as early as nearly a century ago to create a close link between the home environment and the surrounding landscape.
MARCEL WANDERS AND THE ANDAZ HOTEL IN AMSTERDAM
Among the interior design projects that have made waves over the years is that of Marcel Wanders, who renovated the interior of Amsterdam’s Hotel Andaz, located in a prime location between two canals in the center of the Dutch capital.
While the façade is the only preserved element of the original mansion, the interiors have been revolutionized and are now the outcome of a modern reinterpretation of Dutch history: the dreamlike atmosphere in which hotel travelers are enveloped recalls several iconic elements of the national tradition, from tulips to the Golden Age and Delft pottery.
Finally, the presence of books recalls the building’s past, which once served as Amsterdam’s public library.
