That between architecture and interior design is a combination that has profoundly marked the world of furniture and its evolutions in recent decades.
From Vincent Van Duysen to the Italian excellence represented by Antonio Citterio, there are many architects who have stepped into the shoes of the interior designer, transforming environments through a vision strongly influenced by academic studies, with furniture designed not only according to its own form but also in relation to the surrounding space.
It was precisely the ideas and philosophies of some of these architects that provided the basis for the development of several iconic products made by design brands and ended up in the homes of the Italian and international public, which is why SAG’80 has also been committed for several decades now to collaborating with the most prestigious brands and architects to offer only the best to its customers.
Architectural talents transforming spaces
The contribution of architects in the field of interior design has caused a kind of revolution in the way spaces are understood, both in terms of exterior forms and the exploitation of interior surfaces.
Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen is one of the names that best exemplifies the relationship that can be created between these two worlds: after studying architecture, gaining early experience and opening his own studio, Van Duysen became creative director of
Molteni&C
and Dada, influencing both the company’s flagship stores and new collections with his own style, with objects characterized by a close relationship with the external architecture of the buildings in which they are placed.
Antonio Citterio can also boast of a similar path: having obtained a degree in architecture, his Sity sofa designed for B&B Italia had the merit of being ahead of its time, proposing a sofa in line with a renewed conception of the living room, destined in the following years to become a place not only to exhibit but in which to spend moments of sharing and conviviality.
Also decisive was the imprint left by Zaha Hadid, who passed away in 2016 but not before having influenced through the use of fluid lines and futuristic forms both the world of architecture and interior design.
The influence of renowned architects on interior design
But how and why have numerous prestigious architects been able to influence interior design conventions? Certainly playing a key role is the overview typical of those working in the field of architecture, which inevitably leads one to consider the connection between interior and exterior spaces.
This means, for example, that outdoor spaces considered by an architect during a renovation job, such as terraces or verandas, are designed in a way that also impacts indoor environments. Similarly, architects also look for consistency in style for this, with interior design that is able to communicate harmoniously with that of outdoor spaces as well.
Moreover, even on aspects such as room layout, lighting, and the use of structural elements, architects can offer different perspectives and solutions than those used to working on individual rooms.
