Furnish with a designer bookcase

How to furnish home with a designer bookcase

Home is the place where you spend most of your time sharing it with your nearest and dearest. It is a refuge and, in many cases, turns into a real workplace with all its routines and habits. It is certainly a temple of good taste and refinement insofar as it mirrors the people who inhabit it.

Beautiful homes are those filled with books, where these tell stories and passions of those who decided to live there. In this way, the need immediately suggests finding a beautiful and elegant design bookcase in which to place them. A design bookcase not only functional but with its own character and personality that furnishes the interior of a home while giving a touch of style and originality.

To every home its bookcase: how to choose it according to the space available

The need for owning a designer bookcase has to come to terms, first of all, with another kind of need namely the spatial context. One must then identify the areas of the house that are best suited to be filled and traversed by bookshelves. All the more reason that, often, these have peculiar and irregular shapes and are difficult to fit inside small attics that have small space and complex divisions. Similarly, in a reverse situation, there are designer bookcases that also become partitions, create other environments, small niches to take refuge in or treasures to keep hidden. This is the case in open spaces where the use of a well-placed and elegantly shaped bookcase can really revolutionize a space. It is probably the most exciting characteristic of space: that of being traversed, broken down and filled with new meanings.

Walls take center stage in wall-mounted bookcases

Looking inside a living area, already walls come to the rescue when it comes to bookcases. In fact, a functional and refined way of furnishing that combines maximum freedom of spaces, enhancing them, and does not forget the aesthetic impact is wall-mounted bookcases, which seem to glide naturally on the wall and know how to be dynamic. The materials in which they are made, e.g., wood and steel, make them extremely versatile, and their shapes, the result of contemporary design projects, are eye-catching and alluring. The wall becomes the protagonist, it is traversed by these steel and wood serpentines that, almost suspended, run in the direction of a harmonious effect with the rest of the environment. Wall-mounted bookcases are true three-dimensional paintings that donate and come to life inside rooms because of artists who design their lines, directing their destiny.

Creating new environments with dividing bookcases

Dividing the different areas of a house without erecting invasive walls that absorb light and space, weighing down the room is possible with dividing bookcases. Here again you are in the realm of need: you need to divide the space to create more intimate areas within the large open space. By choosing the dividing bookcase, you can create a workstation, a corner where you can relax in peace or simply separate the living and sleeping areas, all while keeping the spaces always open and bright.

The choice most fall on elegant double-sided bookcases that provide visual continuity and functionality. Not only that, but the bookcase compartments, which are much thinner than a wall, also lend themselves well to accommodate small design objects and small refined collections.

Corner, column and modular bookcases to optimize available space

This type of designer bookcases is ideal for meeting the challenge against tight spaces with the banner of functionality and practicality without sacrificing a touch of refined aesthetics. Corner bookcases are ideal for taking advantage of wall corners or filling small wall niches. They can develop in length or width depending on the size of the space they are called upon to furnish. Those that develop in height become true column bookcases with light and airy geometries that immediately relate to the environment. They can be freestanding, floor-standing, fixed on the wall, or suspended; what is certain is that they fit even the most challenging square footage. Modular bookcases are the ultimate in the range of this category of bookcases: they encapsulate the essence of designer bookcases. Whether made of wood or steel, they have a contemporary green and sustainable soul, and those made in Italy do justice to our Made in Italy reputation. A certainty that allows you to play with modular modules by imagining ever new and elegant solutions.

Wood and metal, a touch of the past and modernity for timelessly practical bookcases

The wood’s time is marked in the circles glimpsed when its trunk shows itself. And it is a time that knows no beginning and imagines no end; it is immortal. And this is also why in furniture accessories, wood is a ubiquitous material, reassuring and full of character. Combined with metal it creates an explosive mixture of suggestions, ideas, achievements. Versatile and environmentally sustainable wood and metal travel together into the future. A designer metal and wood bookcase in oak effect instills that industrial chic flavor, emphasized by cleverly placed lighting points, even in a small room. It makes it lived in the history of the materials used. In the versatility of metal  there is the advantage of taking advantage of exploiting modularity. Design bookcases made of wood and metal fit well into the spaces granted to them by reversing the perspective assembled according to new aesthetic canons. Timeless practicality.

Essential lines, wood and versatility for B&B Italia’s Jack

Sag ’80’ s quest within the contemporary design world never knows uncertainty or setbacks. All of its professionals are doubly experienced and trained in both the pieces that have made design history and all the new things that chase each day. All this to accompany the Client in making the best choice for his home, his office, his studio, his corner of paradise away from the city chaos.

“This bookcase system began as an exercise in assembling rods of the same diameter. The final design is an essential configuration that offers ideal structure and modularity to suit a wide range of environments. The technical solutions are discreet and allow for compositions that can be adapted to any room. Its discipline comes from the structural rules used to move from one form to the next, in an assemblage that results in a cohesive composition.”

Michael Anastassiades

If you really want to understand what a designer bookcase is, you can’t help but admire the Jack, designed in 2018 by Michael Anastassiades and the result of the first collaboration between the Cyprus-based designer and B&B Italia. Jack is a modular bookcase system with perfect technology. It is a path toward the search for innovative languages where, in this challenge, a classic design concept is recovered, modernized, and actualized: the large bookcase that dominated the center of the room in the 1950s finds a new home through an essential structure guided by architectural lines.

Technically and in terms of fabrication, all engineered support elements are concealed within the aluminum upright structures and joined together by a unique, invisible telescopic adjustment system.

The bookcase has fourteen heights, shelves in two lengths and numerous depths. In terms of colors, the uprights and shelves are available in two single-color matte finishes: chalk white and black. We turn to wood for storage units in Canaletto walnut and four oak variants (light, gray, black and fumigated).

It is a design bookcase that, as its author suggests, fits into a wide range of environments because of the discipline with which it is designed, which makes it, in this way, free.

Between books and hi-tech, this is how B&B Italia’s Flat.C bookstore reorganizes spaces

“How will the house be transformed? Around what hinges will domestic space be reorganized in the future? How will the objects that populate our inhabited environment change? What new electronic devices will enter the home environment to extend the perception of our living space?

These are the questions that guided Flat.C.’s project.

Inspired by minimum size, Flat.C constitutes the newest chapter in my quest for dimensional upgrading within wall-system typologies.

Flat.C is flat – like the flat screens in our aesthetic imagery related to new ways of consuming video and images.

The goal was to achieve a flexible system where an almost infinite number of different configurations could be provided based on a modular grid that organizes the elements of the composition by constraining their proportion.

The range of storage elements determines the intelligent use of space.

Flat.C is an open, reconfigurable, reassemblable system that expresses a free way of occupying space capable of following the evolution of Multimedia systems.

In the home you change the media, not the furniture that contains it.”

 Antonio Citterio

As early as in 2008 Antonio Citterio posed this question and created the Flat.C for B&B Italia a future-oriented design bookcase that started from a simple, homegrown and familiar intuition: television. An object whose presence has always been able to instill silences, reorganize spaces, and suggest functional solutions.

Flat.C’s goal is to house and contain, with minimal clutter, the books and myriad electronic devices in homes: flat-screen televisions, CD and DVD players, Hi-fi systems, and more. It is to have large volumes in a small, flat space (its depth is only 25 centimeters!), in a modular structure that blends in perfectly with the environment, almost disappearing thanks to the total absence of visible joints and with the extremely reduced thicknesses of tops and sides.

The possibilities for playing with and assembling Flat.C and its containing structures are endless, just as endless are the images produced in the age of technical reproducibility with the big difference, however, that organizing spaces is an essentially human practice.
